This entire post was created using the simplest HTML. All of these fonts are web safe, but people tend to forget that they can play with the italics and bolds to create a brand new feel.

Georgia italic bold
        is beautiful

Bookman Old Style is great at any size
and how about italic or bold?
       or even bold italic?

Courier is old school
but nothing looks like it. It's even italic and bold.
Palatino Linotype in italic and in bold or big!
MS Sans Serif is light and modern.
You can make it teeny tiny   or even italic
Or big and bold
But the best is the plain and simple when it's not too big and not too small. It's legible and simple.
Another great legible font is Trebuchet, which acts as the HTML Helvetica. It's a little squat, but it still works well when it's small. See? You can read it fine. It works best when you need to fit a ton of information in a small space. It has the feeling of a publication and works great for captions.
Or there is old reliable - VERDANA. Along with Arial Arial Arial it is one of the most commonly used HTML fonts. It's clean and non-obtrusive, and dang it, people like it.
Hopefully this opens your eyes to the sometimes forgotten HTML fonts, or perhaps reignited an old love. But either way, it was fun to make and that's what design should be. Play with your fonts or your layouts and you'll stand out. And isn't that what we all really want?
