Shop local. Tweet local.

As consumers we are becoming more focused on finding products and services that are close to home. While the internet has made doing business globally a lot easier, most of us still tend to do business in our own backyards. Whether it’s through necessity or intention, most of our networking occurs locally. Maybe Twitter can help. There are a number of Twitter applications that allow you to search for and connect with local tweeters, including LocalTweepsCityChirp and Tweetie for the iPhone. Let’s look a a couple more.

Twitter Search

twitter search

This is an advanced page of Twitter’s search engine that allows you to search “near” a city. Enter a city and a radius and you get a real-time stream of folks tweeting either from or near your location. Check out this search of people tweeting within 15 miles of Kansas City.

Happn.in

happn.in

This is a Twitter utility that tracks trends in specific metro areas. This application is not specifically design for finding local people, you can use it to locate people talking about what’s going on in Kansas City (or one of the other 51 cities covered by the site). A current trend topic in KC is “Charlie Brown” detailing a few people’s disappointment with the President’s speech interrupting their holiday viewing spectacular.

Nearby Tweets

nearby tweets

Probably one of the most visually appealing apps and easiest to navigate, Nearby Tweets automatically determines where you are, and loads up a list of recent tweets and Twitter users within a specific radius. You can change location, radius, and add keywords.

Go check ‘em out. Oh, and while you’re there why not follow our tweets!
