Sustainability Ability!

Here are some tips to improving sustainability within an organization.

1. Setting Sustainability Goals & Measuring Success

How much value can sustainability create for my organization?
How much cost can I save?
What are my broader corporate goals?

2. Stakeholder Engagement

It’s truly important to identify WHO needs to be engaged and WHAT information will move them. As we all know, social media is a unified way to connect stakeholders together.

3. Sustainability Issues Mapping

First you need to identity your sustainability changes, as well as the issues, sources and opportunities the process can create for your company. You could start with a grid system or cluster mapping about the issues that will be involved. Ask questions to yourself about how sustainability will affect your company.

4. Product Life Cycle Assessment & Product Design

Determine the full range of environmental and social damages that can be attributed to your products or services, then determine the least harmful ways of delivering the product or service. For instance, wrapping your product in plastic, putting it inside a package, and wrapping that package with plastic again – you see this everywhere in stores. It not only creates a frustrating experience for your customer but a harsh impact on your environment (even more-so if your product is popular) .

(1)The most practical, unique designs come out of sustainable packaging. The less material used the more unique the product is – and of course this has a less of an impact on the environment – A win win. Here is an example

(2) Re-using recycled material for your product or packaging creates a familiar, unique and personable essence for your company, as well as create sustainable trust. Here is an examples:
1                                                                                       2.

5. Sustainability / CSR Reporting

Depending on the size of a company and its public profile, it may make sense to develop a formal sustainability report. Go with Web versions to save paper. Have an online database that others can access and have meetings over them – to also save paper.

6. Integrating Sustainability into Your Brand

Green marketing doesn’t have to be a niche product or service. If sustainability is integrated into a company’s operations, sustainability can be the main selling point of the whole product line. Having corporate culture that fosters sustainability is the most constructive way of seeing sustainability permeate the product or service line.
